The Journal of Zoology is one of the oldest scientific journals in the world. This month, the cover of the journal presents Eunomia (Boloria eunomia), the butterfly photographed in the Knyszyńska Forest by Izabela Dziekańska – PhD student at the Institute of Biology of the University of Bialystok.
The journal consists an article devoted to this butterfly species, and its co-authors are researchers from the UB.
Eunomia’s research was conducted by a team headed by Dr Marcin Sielezniew, in cooperation with Dr Piotr Nowicki from the Jagiellonian University and Dr Krzysztof Pałka from Lublin. Using the method of marking, the researchers found that the eunomias inhabiting different habitats, i.e. wet meadows and bog forests, differ significantly in terms of life expectancy. The most “long-lived” eunomias turned out to be meadow females.
