On the initiative of the scholars gathered around the Jerzy Giedroyc Centre at the University of Łódź, they have written an open letter concerning responsible historical education and the place of the humanities in the Polish scientific system, appealing for the establishment of a National Humanities Centre.
“We are aware that the Polish state faces enormous expenditure on defence, health care or social welfare. However, we know that investments in the humanities, social sciences and cultural sciences, although they do not guarantee a return that can be expressed in percentage terms, are an equally strategic investment”, says the ‘Łódź Declaration’.
The authors of the declaration call for the establishment of “a new agency, independent of the political conjuncture – the National Centre for the Humanities, intended for the transparent allocation of scientific/educational grants and targeted subsidies both for individual researchers and educators, as well as institutions undertaking critical reflection on the Polish and world cultural heritage”.
