Central Statistical Office presents report on higher education in Poland

04.11.2020

The Central Statistical Office (GUS) published an annual report on higher education in Poland, based on data from 353 out of 373 universities currently operating in Poland.

The report shows that 1.2 million people studied at Polish universities in the 2019/2020 academic year, i.e. 2.1% less than in the previous year. This confirms the continuation of the downward trend observed from the middle of the last decade. In more than 10 years, the number of students decreased by over 1/3, from 1.94 million in the academic year 2007/2008.

However, the report presents a growing interest in education in Poland among foreigners. In 2019, there were 82.2 thousand foreigners in comparison to 78.3 thousand in the previous year. More than half included Ukrainians (39 thousand), followed by Belarusians (8.3 thousand), Indians (3.3 thousand) and Spaniards (2.2 thousand).

The leader of the list of the largest universities is invariably the University of Warsaw (40.6 thousand students) before the Jagiellonian University (35.3 thousand) and the University of Adam Mickiewicz in Poznań (33.7 thousand).
