Chemists from the Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań recreated the unique medieval colors. This is a key element of the conservation work on reconstructing a drawing on the tombstone of the Rabenstorp family in the church of St. John the Evangelist in Szczecin.
Working under the guidance of Prof. Jerzy Langer, scientists from the university faculty of chemistry based on the results of spectrometric analyzes and obtained the formula of the coloring paint composed of wood tar with the addition of crushed pyrite.
– The composition of the dye has turned out to be unique, as well as the discovered technology of its use in the form of emulsions – says Prof. Langer. The coloring material was reproduced with great precision in both chemical and microstructural aspects, with the aim to ensure that all components and operations used were available in the Middle Ages. We can even talk about copying the original coloring mass and the technology of its use – adds the Professor.
