The International Astronomical Union (IAU) together with the Polish Astronomical Society (PTA) has launched a nationwide competition for names for the extrasolar planet and its stars.
– The aim of the competition is to increase the awareness of our place in the Universe as the inhabitants of the planet Earth, living under one common sky. Everyone can make a small contribution to describing the cosmos by proposing a name or by voting the proposals – says Dr Krzysztof Czart, National Coordinator of the IAU on Popularization, managing the Polish part of the competition.
The IAU offered Poland the name BD + 14 4559- the star and its planet. It is visible in the constellation of Pegasus.
Proposals of names can be submit only through the contest website: www.iau100.pl/planety. The deadline is 31 July 2019.
