Despite the smaller number of cars and recommendations for reducing mobility in March and April, the level of air pollution in Wroclaw was higher than last year – said the scientists from the faculty of environmental engineering and the faculty of computer science and management of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology.
The aim of their study conducted from March 11 to April 2 was to analyze the variability of PM2.5 concentrations during limited activity of the academic community and residents of Wrocław, caused by introducing the state of pandemic and the virus spread.
A system of twenty devices located at the Wrocław University of Science and Technology was used for the study. During the analyzed period, PM2.5 concentrations were significantly higher in 2020, the highest results were observed at night. Between 22:00 and 6:00 hours, average hourly concentrations were recorded by 118-137% higher compared to those recorded in 2019.
