Nearly six weeks of archaeological excavations in Orły in the Przemyśl district have come to an end, and during this year’s season researchers and students from the Institute of Archaeology at the University of Rzeszów (UR) have made many interesting discoveries.
The discoveries significantly expand the knowledge of the existence of human populations in the borderland of the Kańczucka Upland and the Lower San Valley over several thousand years.
One of the most interesting results of the research at Orły was the identification of a niche grave of the Corded ware culture dated to the 3rd thousand BC.
Inside the site, at a depth of nearly two metres, the skeletons of two people, arranged in a contracted position, were found. The deceased were accompanied by various grave gifts, including pottery, hatchets, bone chisels and other objects. The archaeological and bioarchaeological materials recovered will be subjected to specialised laboratory analyses, and the results of this work will be published and made widely available in the future.
Archaeologists will return to the Orły as early as next season.
