Archaeologists led by Dr Marcin Ignaczak, Prof. of the Adam Mickiewicz University, working on the Kolegiacki Square in Poznań, discovered a wall that was probably part of the presbytery of the former church of St. Mary Magdalene. Researchers also discovered other monuments.
– This is an extremely valuable finding for us. All sources say that at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries the collegiate church was completely demolished. So we had reasonable concerns that we would not find well-preserved temple perimeter walls. Although at one time the collegiate church was the tallest church in Poland, its plans have not been preserved so far. Therefore, every detail that allows us to determine where exactly it was located is priceless – says Prof. Ignaczak.
Archaeologists also discovered a medallion – probably from the 18th century – with a perfectly preserved call-prayer to Saint Agata and a medallion with the image of the Virgin Mary and numerous coins.
