14.08.2018

Archaeologists from the University of Gdańsk during the excavations in the East Ramparts of the Wisłoujście Fortress discovered the remains of the barracks, foundations of the church of St. Olaf and about 2 thousand exhibits.

Researchers during the two-week archaeological excavations found fragments of ceramics with the Gdańsk coat of arms and numerous objects made of metal – bullets, metal ornaments, knives, cleaver, coins and a luncheon.

The archaeological works will last the next three years. They are implemented as part of the Archaeobalt project, co-financed from the European Union under the South Baltic Program 2014-2020. The project leader is the University of Gdańsk and the partners are the Gdańsk Museum, the Bornholm Museum, the University of Aarhus (Denmark) and the University of Lund (Sweden).

The Wisłoujście fortress is a complex of defensive buildings on the right bank of the Martwa Wisła. It was established in a place where in the medieval coastal guards operated controlling the estuary of the Vistula to the Baltic Sea.
