Peat bogs, occupying about 2% of the lands on Earth, accumulate almost twice more coal than forests; they accumulate ¼ of coal in all ecosystems in the world. The square meter of peatland receives annually about 1 kg of carbon dioxide – recalls the communication of the Warsaw University of Life Sciences (SGGW).
Research conducted at this university has shown a comprehensive, beneficial effect of peatlands on the condition and balance of the natural environment.
Peatlands are not worth drying them up. Profits from leaving them untouched are higher than profits from obtained arable land.
– The governments of many countries have noticed that the use of peatlands does not require their degradation – emphasized Dr Mateusz Grygoruk from the Department of Hydrology and Water Resources of the Faculty
Construction and Environmental Engineering SGGW – and they direct significant efforts to restore their original state.
