The European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) will once again fund the project of Prof. Michał R. Szymański, head of the Department of Structural Biology at the University of Gdańsk, and his team. Scientists will study the enzymes responsible for the replication and repair of genetic material in humans, bacteria and viruses.
Mitochondrial DNA damage contributes to mitochondrial dysfunction. It is associated not only with the aging processes, but also with many disease syndromes of complex etiology, such as neoplastic and metabolic diseases (including diabetes) and neurodegenerative diseases (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease) – says Prof. Szymański.
As part of his research, the laboratory of Prof. Szymański cooperated with the European Research Council (ERC Starting Grant), the Foundation for Polish Science (FNP), the National Science Center (NCN), the European Molecular Biology Organization (EMBO) and the Ministry of Education and Science.
