Two employees of the University of Opole became arbitrators of the first international arbitral tribunal for art in The Hague. The Court of Arbitration for Art (CAfA) is to be a permanent forum for conducting arbitration proceedings and mediation in the field of cultural goods. Only three arbitrators from Poland sit in it.
Alternative methods of settlement are increasingly used to resolve disputes regarding cultural goods. Most often, the materials analyzed in the course of the proceedings are extremely extensive and cover various legal systems.
Recruitment and assessment of applications of candidates for the CAfA arbitrators and mediators database took over a year. As a result, Prof. Piotr Stec and Dr Alicja Jagielska-Burduk from the Institute of Legal Sciences of the Opole University were successfully selected.
Opole members of CAfA are also on the list of mediators of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Committee for the Promotion of the return of cultural goods to their country of origin or their restitution in the event of illegal acquisition of property rights.
