The Senate of the University of Lodz (UŁ) decided to award the title of doctor honoris causa (dhc) to Herman Van Rompuy, former President of the European Council and Prime Minister of Belgium. The doctorate promoter is Prof. Rafał Matera, dean of the Faculty of Economics and Sociology of the University of Lodz.
The university is awarding Mr. Herman Van Rompuy the title of honorary doctor because of his merits for European integration and for his contribution to the development of European universities.
-In this case we are dealing with a person (in the sense of personalism) and a crystal-European public personality. We can say about a rare contemporary European politician that his formation is thoroughly and thoroughly European. If one were to look for comparisons to Polish statesmen, the only name that comes to mind is Tadeusz Mazowiecki. Mr. Herman Van Rompuy is a Catholic intellectual, an unspectacular but effective man of compromise, an idealist with the soul of a poet, who has engaged in public life and politics, acting for the common good, being faithful to his values, and at the same time ready to dialogue and seeking agreement with people of a different worldview or ideology – wrote Prof. Roman Kuźniar from the University of Warsaw.
