26.05.2021

Dr Mariusz Siemiński, head of the Department and Clinic of Emergency Medicine at the Medical University of Gdańsk, is one of the participants of the International COVID-19 Sleep Study (ICOSS) project, which studies the relationship between sleep disorders and SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Over 26 thousand people participated in the survey including respondents from the USA, China, France, Germany, Italy, Finland and Poland. The result of the work is the article “The association between high risk of sleep apnea, comorbidities and risk of COVID-19: a population-based international harmonized study” published in the Sleep and Breathing journal.

The researchers have summarized data on the relationship between the symptoms of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS) and the course of COVID-19. They showed that OSAS patients were more likely to be infected with SARS-CoV-2. It was also found that the presence of OSAS symptoms increased the risk of a severe course of the disease requiring hospitalization in the intensive care unit.
