Kraken won the poll for the name for the supercomputer of the Gdansk University of Technology (PG). In the vote on the website Trójmiasto.pl, it clearly beat Abaris, Gaja and Tridens, winning 52 % of the votes. Almost 4,000 people took part in the vote.

The name refers to a mythical sea creature. It is extremely powerful, quite like the computing power of a supercomputer, and the impressive reach of its arms, can be associated with the broad, multi-faceted applications of the new device.

Kraken will be part of PG’s STOS Competence Centre – one of the most modern IT centres in this part of Europe. The facility will be the new headquarters of the IT Centre of the Tri-City Academic Computer Network PG. Once the complex and the supercomputer itself are up and running, the university will be able to carry out advanced research work and solve problems in virtually all areas of our lives, including medicine, biotechnology, physics and astronomy.
