Global warming increases the number of plant species on the mountain peaks

06.04.2018

In the last 10 years, the number of plant species on mountain peaks increased five times faster than in the years 1957-1966. The Polish botanists Dr Bogdan Jaroszewicz and Patryk Czortek from the Białobrzegi Geobotanical Station of the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw write about it in the journal Nature.

The data for the last 145 years, provided from 302 European peaks indicate that the acceleration in the growth of species variety is directly linked to global warming. Researchers proved that mountain flora shows a tendency consistent with the so-called “Global great acceleration” – faster changes taking place in the global economy, society and ecosystems.

The research was conducted by the botanists from 11 European countries. Researchers did not only collect up-to-date data on the flora of 302 mountain peaks, but also performed a literature query to access research reports and botanical tours of nineteenth-century botanists.
