The ‘History of Botanical Collections’ exhibition is on display at the Faculty of Biology, University of Gdańsk. Its creators attempt to answer the questions of how, over the centuries, people have collected, created and used botanical collections and the origins of species naming.
The showcases feature exhibits of historical collections that discuss the early use and importance of plants for humans, the first studies of properties such as medicinal properties. Visitors will learn how the scientific nomenclature of organisms was created, unified for the whole world, and how organisms were grouped into hierarchical systems, which was the task of Karol Linnaeus, among others.
The exhibition is part of the project ‘Herbarium Pomeranicum – digitising and making available the herbarium collections of Pomeranian academic units by combining them and making them digitally accessible’. The Virtual Herbarium of Pomerania brings together resources collected by four Pomeranian herbaria.
