A laboratory for 3D imaging of cells and tissues and correlative microscopy has been operating at the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine of the University of Warmia and Mazury (UWM) in Olsztyn for more than two years. It is the only such laboratory in Poland and one of the most modern in Europe.
It makes it possible to study cells using so-called volumetric electron microscopy.
The science magazine Nature named it one of the seven most promising research techniques in 2023, alongside the Webb telescope.
The heart of the laboratory is a high-resolution scanning electron microscope equipped with backscattered electron detectors with very high sensitivity.
Thanks to the lab, Olsztyn researchers can describe what a whole cell really looks like, both from the outside and inside. Until recently, no scientist could visualise a cell in its entirety in the electron microscope, but now they have the possibility to examine even a large group of cells in detail.
