An innovative method of wastewater treatment developed by Wrocław University of Technology (PWr) and Miejskie Przedsiębiorstwo Wodociągów i Kanalizacji (MPWiK) in Wrocław will support the work of other waterworks in Poland. A licence agreement for the use of the technology has already been signed by MPWiK from Żywiec.

Researchers from the Wrocław University of Science and Technology, in cooperation with specialists from the Wrocław MPWiK, have developed an innovative method for removing nitrogen from digestion leachate at the Wrocław “Janówek” Wastewater Treatment Plant. Until now, these leachates were sent to the sewage line, where they were removed through a process of nitrification and denitrification.

“Thanks to the implementation of the new technology in Wrocław, MPWiK will reduce the energy demand for aerating the wastewater in the biological blocks by approximately 7-9 per cent. Until now, the annual cost of this process has amounted to as much as half a million zlotys. In addition, it will be possible to increase the volume of treated wastewater admitted to the Wrocław treatment plant”, says Wojciech Stanek, Vice President of MPWiK S.A. in Wrocław.
