The Institute of Polish Language of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) has launched the Internet Dictionary of Polish Surnames (ISNP). It allows users to check the origin of a given surname and where in Poland it can be found.
ISNP is a free and freely accessible electronic collection of almost 30,000 entries. The surnames are discussed in contemporary and historical terms.
The dictionary provides information on the origin of the surname and its variety. It also contains the frequency of occurrence in individual provinces and the world. A special application allows to search for surnames alphabetically and to sort the results.
The dictionary was created from 2014 on the basis of current PESEL-type data. Linguists edited the headword articles, i.e. entered relevant information from other print and online sources into the individual modules within the established headword structure.
