Scientists from the University of Silesia in Katowice tested selected compounds based on a terpyridine system – containing three specially connected pyridine systems. It showed that they can be used to produce drugs effective in the treatment of colon, lung, breast and brain cancers. The solution has been patented.
The mainstream of research in the field of pharmacology and drug chemistry today is the design of new compounds that will recognize and destroy cancer cells without harming healthy tissues. Thanks to this, the new drugs will be less toxic to the patient’s body.
From this perspective, organic compounds with the ability to chelate, i.e. to capture specific metal ions, may be very promising. The chelators include the most common heterocyclic derivatives, such as pyridine derivatives. They are known to have strong anti-cancer properties.
