01.06.2021

Prof. Jacek Popiel, the rector of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow decided to create the Climate Council of the Jagiellonian University. This body was composed of 25 academic representatives of the Jagiellonian University, who will develop recommendations and plan activities related to ecology and climate protection.

The Jagiellonian University emphasizes that the establishment of the Climate Council is the result of a grassroots initiative of the academic community, focused on the KlimatUJ movement. Its representatives in January this year. submitted a petition to the university authorities, signed by over 1,000 people. Their dozen postulates included a call to create a plan for the Jagiellonian University to become a carbon neutral institution, conduct an energy audit of the university and take steps to reduce energy consumption or eliminate plastic in the packaging, promotional and office materials from university premises by the end of this year.

The main tasks of the Council will include the development of the university climate strategy and the popularization of knowledge about the climate and ecological crisis. The Council will also shape the climate policy of the Jagiellonian University, taking into account its impact on the activities of the authorities of Kraków, the Małopolska region and Poland.
