Nearly 30 gray seals, a dozen sea ducks and over 200 razorbills, a species of medium sea birds were observed in the Mewia Łacha reserve belonging to the Marine Station of the Institute of Oceanography at the University of Gdańsk during the visit of employees of the World Fund for Nature – WWF Poland and WWF Kenia (WWF – World Wildlife Fund). The only Polish refuge for seals is located at the mouth of the Vistula.

The place is monitored as part of a joint project of the University of Gdańsk and the World Fund for Nature – “Protection of mammals and seabirds and their habitats.” It was started two years ago and aims to protect marine mammals – seals, porpoises and coastal breeding birds.

The Marine Station scientists presented research and educational activities for the protection of the Baltic Sea, including long-term joint projects with the WWF Polska foundation. The visitors had the opportunity to familiarize with the educational and display infrastructure, they visited the so-called House of Porpoise and observed medical training of gray seals, when the animals learn to accept human presence (kp)
