Professor Kazimierz Braun, a playwright, director and writer formerly associated with the University of Wrocław, has been awarded the London Prize for Literature, granted for the 72nd time by the Union of Polish Writers Abroad. He was honoured for his life’s work, with particular emphasis on his writing, theatre and academic activities after settling in the United States in 1985.
“My first reaction was one of great surprise and embarrassment, for this prestigious award had been received in the past by Czesław Miłosz, Gustaw Herling-Grudziński and Włodzimierz Odojewski. I felt unworthy of such a great prize. However, I felt joy that in this way my many years of numerous scientific, literary, theatrical and pedagogical works were somehow summed up”, says Professor Braun.
The laureate was a lecturer in cultural studies at Wrocław for over ten years (1974-1985). He habilitated at the University of Wrocław in 1984.
