Scientists from the Department of Mechanics and Vibroacoustics of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Robotics at the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow has conducted a comprehensive acoustic analysis of ice caves at Spitsbergen.
In March, the third scientific expedition took place. Works were carried out during this and two previous expeditions (in August 2016 and in February 2017) by: Prof. Eng. Jerzy Wiciak, Prof. Eng. Antoni Kalukiewicz, Dr Eng. Janusz Piechowicz, Dr Eng Dorota Czopek and Dr Eng Paweł Małecki. It is an important starting point for further acoustic studies in the polar environment, and in particular for the observation of acoustic climate changes. During this year’s expedition, acoustic measurements were made in four ice caves: Larsbreen, Longyearbreen and Tellbreen.
It is planned to continue the acoustic research in Spitsbergen in the summer season, therefore the existing recordings database will be supplemented with the Barentsburg acoustic map in the summer time and acoustic monitoring of the bird colonies in the area of the Fuglefjell plateau.
