Medical University in Wrocław to launch studies on the effect of chloroquine on the course of complications in coronavirus infection

Nationwide program to study the effect of chloroquine on the prevention or reduction of severe pulmonary complications in the course of coronavirus infection has been launched. It is coordinated by scientists from the Medical University in Wrocław. The program was selected and funded by the Medical Research Agency as one of the priority directions of combating the epidemic.

In addition to Wrocław university, the research is also conducted by Łódź and Poznań universities. People qualified for the research will be analyzed with equipment that will monitor their most important vital functions and then the results will be analyzed on an ongoing basis at the telemedicine center of the Medical University in Wrocław.

The half of the participants will be proposed to be treated for 14 days with chloroquine. – We have reason to believe that this drug may be effective in preventing the development of pneumonia, respiratory complications, including the need for treatment in intensive care units in patients infected with COVID-19 – says deputy rector of the University, Prof. Piotr Ponikowski.
