Medical University of Silesia receives PLN 1.5 million for drug phototoxicity studies

07.06.2021

Dr Jakub Rok from the Department of Chemistry and Drug Analysis of the Medical University of Silesia will implement the project: “Development of an in vitro model for the assessment of phototoxicity of drugs with different affinity to melanin using a sunlight simulator – study of cellular, molecular and biochemical mechanisms in the course of a phototoxic reaction”.

Dr Jakub Rok obtained PLN 1.5 million for his research under the Sonata-16 competition of the National Science Center. The assumption of the project is to assess the complexity of the pathophysiological basis of phototoxicity and multi-directional research to assess the risk of skin side effects.

The innovativeness of the experimental panel implemented as part of the project includes the use of cells with different pigmentation, irradiation with an advanced simulator of sunlight and multidirectional aspects of pharmacological properties of drugs. The obtained grant will allow research and presentation of applications.
