Researchers from the University of Warsaw (UW) in cooperation with researchers from Oslo Metropolitan University, University of Oslo, Lancaster University and the University of Cambridge are conducting a project aimed at examining the early linguistic development of Polish monolingual and multilingual children. Scientists study the child’s first spoken words, vocabulary development, first sentence composition and grammar development.

As a result of these works, scientists from the MultiLADA team from the Faculty of Psychology of the University of Warsaw, developed a mobile application for observing the earliest language development of children.

“StarWords – every word counts” is the first application of this type in Poland, which resembles an internet speech diary. It can be used by parents of Polish children who are single, double or even trilingual. Parents should write basic information about the child in the application, including the child’s gender, date of birth, languages, and then enter the child’s new gestures, words and sentences. In addition, they should regularly provide information about their child’s linguistic environment and the languages to which they have access.

The free application “StarWords – every word counts” is aimed at parents of children aged 0-2. The application is available in Google Play Store and Apple App Store.
