Students from the Interdepartmental Student Research Group on the Application of Artificial Intelligence Methods AI-METH at the Silesian University of Technology presented the Phoenix III Mars rover. The design is prepared for participation in the Anatolian Rover Challenge.
During the competition in Istanbul, Turkey, the rover will have to reach certain points on a simulated Martian field and perform certain operations using a robotic arm, such as turning valves. The rover will also be tasked with taking a soil sample, which will then allow a team of researchers to analyse the collected material for signs of life or the possibility of growing plants on Mars.
The designers of the rover have no doubt that their design is unique and able to cope with many challenges in space as well. The first unique feature is the material from which it is made. Most of the components are made – for the first time in the world – of carbon-epoxy fibre.
