New president of the Polish Academy of Sciences

During the 147th Session of the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the members of the Academy decided that Prof. Marek Konarzewski will serve as President of the PAN for the next four years. 

Prof. Marek Konarzewski received 105 votes, the other candidate, Prof. Paweł Rowiński, won 102 votes. 

Prof. Marek Konarzewski is a biologist. He deals with the borderline issues of ecology, evolutionary biology, physiology and animal evolution. He works at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Białystok and at the Faculty “Artes Liberales” of the University of Warsaw. He is a correspondent member of the Polish Academy of Sciences since 2010 from the Division II of Biological and Agricultural Sciences of the Polish Academy of Sciences. He also serves as vice-president of the Olsztyn and Białystok branches of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

According to the Act on the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Konarzewski will formally become the new, thirteenth President of the Polish Academy of Sciences only upon his appointment by the Prime Minister. This appointment is made on the basis of an election by the General Assembly of the Polish Academy of Sciences.
