Researchers from the Institute of Biology and Earth Sciences at the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk will carry out a project ‘Development of principles of natural monitoring for heathlands protected by controlled burning’. The research is entirely funded by the State Forests, with a total grant of almost one million PLN.

As part of the project, employees of the Pomeranian Academy in Słupsk, in cooperation with researchers from the University of Wrocław, will study the impact of burning on vegetation, the availability of various elements in the soil and vegetation, and the fauna inhabiting the burned areas. The rate of heather regeneration and the order in which individual arthropod species colonise the surface will be assessed.

Modern equipment will be used for the research, including drones with a set of multispectral cameras and advanced mapping software for agriculture, forestry and scientific research, as well as state-of-the-art laboratory equipment for environmental analysis.
