Nobel laureate in physics, Prof. Gérard Mourou, will be the guest of the Interdisciplinary Scientific Seminar at the Congress Center of the Wrocław University of Science and Technology on March 2.. The scientist will give a lecture on ultra-high power lasers.
Professor Mourou has been a pioneer in the field of ultrafast lasers and their applications in scientific, engineering and medical disciplines for over 30 years. In the field of ophthalmology, his work resulted in the developing of IntraLASIK technology used in over 5 million patients.
In 1983, together with his PhD student Donna Strickland, he developed the CPA (Chirped Pulses Amplification) technique. It enabled the amplification of ultra-short laser pulses to very high optical powers (PW – petawatts), consisting in stretching before strengthening the laser pulse, and after strengthening its compression. It was a breakthrough in laser technology of ultra-short high-power pulses. For its development, Mourou and Strickland received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 2018.
