Nobel laureate to visit the University of Silesia in October

The University of Silesia will be visited by Nobel laureate Professor Donna Strickland. The physicist will give guest lectures and meet with the academic community and people from the region. From 24 to 27 October, the co-discoverer of the method for generating high-intensity laser pulses will talk about her research work, as well as the role of women in science.

In 1981, fresh out of university, Donna Strickland joined the laboratory of French physicist Gérard Mourou, who was experimenting with laser pulses. In 1985, the researchers jointly developed a technique to generate very short but extremely intense laser pulses. They were honoured with the 2018 Nobel Prize in Physics for their discovery of a method to amplify ultrafast, ‘chirped pulse’, laser pulses (CPA).

The Nobel laureates’ discoveries are used by doctors in laser eye surgery, in industry for precision material cutting and in medical imaging.
