The winner of the Nobel Prize in physics Prof. Klaus von Klitzing will be a guest of the Wrocław University of Technology. On Tuesday, April 17, the Nobel Prize winner will hold a lecture on “The New Kilogram Pattern in 2019: The Greatest Revolution in Metrology After the French Revolution”.
The lecture concerns the changes in the International System of Units (SI system). Currently, only a basic unit of kilogram is defined on the basis of a specific object (platinum-iridium roller stored in Sevres). After the change, all 7 units will be based on universal physical constants, that is, phenomena, not objects. This will be possible thanks to the von Klitzing’s discovery of the “quantum Hall phenomenon” for which the scientist received the Nobel Prize.
Professor von Klitzing was born in 1943 in Sroda Wielkopolska in Poland. He is one of the most-cited scientists in the world, he is a doctor or professor of honor from 22 universities around the world.
