PhD student of the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław becomes a laureate of the Polish Bioinformatics Society competition

10.06.2020

Bartosz Czech, a PhD student at the University of Life Sciences in Wrocław, has won the competition of the Polish Bioinformatics Society. In the 12th competition, the jury evaluated 12 master’s theses from Polish universities.

The PhD work concerned 217 animals representing different breeds of domestic cattle and included alignment with the new reference genome and detection of DNA mutations, referred to as single nucleotide polymorphisms.

– Older techniques allowed to check mutations of only selected genes, however for several years the so-called next generation sequencing allows to analyze the entire genome in real time. In the case of a human being, it is a sequence of over 3 billion base pairs – says Bartosz Czech.

The competition of the Polish Bioinformatics Society aims to popularize bioinformatics, encourage graduate students to develop ambitious solutions and familiarize the environment with the leading work carried out in various scientific centers.
