On 28 November 2023, the Polish astronomical observatory Cerro Armazones Observatory (OCA) in the Atacama Desert in Chile was inaugurated.

Ultimately, six state-of-the-art telescopes located at an altitude of 2817 m above sea level, with more than 340 cloudless nights per year and a perfectly stable atmosphere, are expected to allow the calibration of the cosmic distance scale. This is undoubtedly one of the greatest achievements of Polish astronomy”, said Professor Rafał Moderski, director of the Nicolaus Copernicus Astronomical Centre of the Polish Academy of Sciences, which will manage the facility.

The opening ceremony was the culmination of three years of intensive work during which the observatory was rebuilt and adapted to carry out demanding astronomical projects. In a press release, the head of the OCA, Professor Grzegorz Pietrzynski, highlighted the development opportunities that Polish astronomers will receive thanks to this facility, calling the observatory an investment in the future.
