The Polish language in Lithuanian schools with the Polish language of instruction will return to the list of compulsory subjects for the final exam. Such a decision was made in Vilnius after the meeting of the Deputy Minister of Education and Science, Tomasz Rzymkowski, with the Minister of Education of Lithuania, Jurgita Šiugždinienė. Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Szymon Szynkowski vel Sęk also participated in the talks.
The negotiations of the Polish delegation with the Lithuanian Ministry of Education regarding the situation of Polish education in Lithuania lasted nearly four hours.
For over 20 years, Poles in Lithuania demanded that Polish language will be restored as a compulsory subject at final exams. The Polish language was removed from the list of compulsory subjects at the Lithuanian final examination in 1998.
It was agreed that 2022 will be the year of preparations for the state final exam. From this year, graduates of national minority schools will take the state exam in the mother tongue. Also, consultations with national minority communities will be taken.
In Lithuania, there are 70 schools with Polish as the language of instruction, attended by approximately 12,000 students.
