Polish researchers including Dr Eng. Przemysław Data, from the Silesian University of Technology developed new chemical compounds that can be used as light emitters in OLED. This is another step towards even more efficient displays in line with the trend of sustainable technologies.

Image displays accompany people at every step. Those based on OLED emit light without the need for additional backlighting – so they can be thinner and lighter and achieve higher contrast.

The light emission in OLED is caused by an organic semiconductor layer placed between two electrodes, one of which is transparent. The color of the emitted light depends on the composition of the semiconductor layer – various chemical compounds, the so-called emitters give a different color.

As part of the research, a series of potential new emitters based on aromatic compounds donating and accepting electrons, the so-called donors and acceptors, connected in an anti-aromatic seven-membered ring.
