Since 2006, Polish scientists have been implementing a project called “Polish Science Expeditions to Peru.” The initiator and the head of those expeditions is Prof. Eng. Andrzej Paulo from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow.
Polish scientists from the Faculty of Geosciences of the University of Silesia participated in the most recent trip to Peru. The main goal of the expedition in 2017 was research on the manifestations of modern tectonic activity in the subduction zone on the South American oncoming (top) lithospheric plate, under which the Nazca plate is moving at a rate of 63 mm per year.
Scientific research conducted by employees of the Silesian university are related to the project called “Creating a scientific foundation for the future Colca Canyon National Park and the Volcano Valley in southern Peru”. This project was included in the group of 40 scientific programs selected in the competition for the most outstanding achievements of Polish science as part of a project “Promotion of the achievements of Polish science” co-financed by the European Union.
