Polish scientists discuss the threats to cities in the face of the climate crisis

06.10.2021

Poorly designed cities contribute to climate change while being particularly vulnerable to the effects of the climate crisis. After 2040, the mortality rate in Warsaw will increase to over 225% compared to this year, – warn members of the climate crisis advisory team at the president of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN).

Globally, cities are responsible for 60-70% of energy consumption and 75% of carbon emissions. They are also areas extremely vulnerable to the effects of climate change, due to the density of population and infrastructure. The intensification of extreme weather phenomena, such as heatwaves, heavy rains, violent storms or hurricane winds, may cause significant material losses as well as direct and indirect threats to human life and health as well as socio-economic stability.
