Scientists of the Mammal Research Institute of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN), the Polish Academy of Sciences Institute of Biochemistry and Biophysics and the Faculty of Biology of the University of Warsaw researched the reproductive habits of whiskered bats, one of the most common species of bats. They tracked the animals using telemetric micro transmitters and published their results in the prestigious open-access scientific journal PLoSONE.
In Beskid Śląski and Kotlina Żywiecka, scientists caught 21 specimens and equipped the captured bats with special telemetric microtransmitters of 0.4 grams of weigh.
Thanks to radio signals sent by the transmitters, scientists were able to identify the places where these animals stayed most often, i.e. to recognize their hiding places and favorite feeding grounds.
Research has shown that the average area used by these mammals for feeding is about 26 ha.
