Polish scientists from the Jagiellonian University and the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow are looking for the place of one of the greatest battles of antiquity won by Alexander the Great.
The Battle of Gaugamel, in 331, p.n.e. between the Macedonian-Greek armies under the command of Alexander the Great and the Persian army commanded by the king Darius III, led in effect to the collapse of the Persian empire.
The research is financed by a grant from the National Science Center and conducted in today’s Iraq, in cooperation with the Italian archaeological mission from the University of Udine. Their goal is to determine the exact location of the Battle of Gaugamel in the light of multidisciplinary research. In addition to the sources of ancient, archival and contemporary cartographic data, satellite technologies will play an important role in research.
