Dr Maciej Trzaskowski’s photograph ‘Every chestnut has its thorn’ won 1st place in the General Nano/Micro category of the #ERN2022 Photo Competition, which is dedicated to science, technology and art.
The photo by a scientist from the Centre for Advanced Materials and Technology CEZAMAT at Warsaw University of Technology shows chestnut pollen collected in May 2022 in Warsaw. The spikes protruding from the surface of the pollen grains help the grains to attach themselves to insects, which unknowingly carry them between the trees.
The photograph was taken using a Hitachi SU8230 scanning electron microscope belonging to CEZAMAT of the Warsaw University of Technology, magnification 2000X.
A special mention was also given to the second photograph by Dr Trzaskowski, ‘Claws of the (micro)Beast’, showing the apex of a limb of the larder beetle.
