Polish scientists propose how to fight the effects of drought

25.05.2020

The lack of available water resources is having a negative impact on the functioning of industry, and deep agricultural drought is increasingly limiting agricultural production in Poland. “Without a radical change in water management and a significant delay in the outflow of rainwater from the catchment area, these problems will get worse” wrote scientists from the Polish Hydrobiological Society and the Science for Nature movement to the Prime Minister.

Scientists are proposing a number of solutions that would facilitate the fight against drought in Poland. They postulate to subordinate entirely the forest management in river basin supply areas (especially in the mountains) to water retention and not for logging.

In addition, they propose to renaturate all available habitats and landscape elements that retain rainwater effectively, including wetlands, river floodplains and rivers themselves, mid-field trees and small reservoirs; modify the energy strategy, resigning from the use of brown coal, whose extraction in opencast mines is accompanied by large-scale drainage, surface water loss and drastic lowering of the groundwater table, or to promote and subsidize the reuse of rainwater in cities.
