Alicja Bińkowska, the head of WeedTeam from the Center for Neurocognitive Research at the Institute of Psychology, SWPS University of Social Sciences and Humanities in Warsaw, has completed the first Polish research on recreational smoking marijuana. Scientists were mainly interested in the effects of long-term marijuana consumption on visual memories, remembering people and places.

79 researched patients were divided into three groups. The first included regular cannabis- smokers for a minimum of 2 years; the second – users of cannabis and at least one other psychoactive substance illegal in Poland for the last 3 months; the third were people who do not smoke marihuana or take other psychoactive substances that are illegal in Poland – explains Alicja Bińkowska.

To the surprise of the researchers, the research showed that long-term recreational smoking of marijuana, when started after the age of 20, does not damage visual memory, does not affect the memory of events.

Moreover, the use of other psychoactive substances does not affect the functioning of visual episodic memory. The only effect that the researchers noted was an effect on more brain activity related to memory processes.
