Polish scientists to investigate how smog affects children’s brains

07.10.2019

Polish scientists associated in the NeuroSmog consortium want to examine several hundred children to determine how smog affects the developing brain. They received over PLN 15 million from the Foundation for Polish Science (FnP) as part of the TEAM-NET program for research.

The work will be conducted by the Institutes of Psychology and Applied Psychology of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow and the Institute of Environmental Protection in Warsaw, crating the maps of air pollution.
Researchers want to confirm the hypothesis of the negative impact of smog on the developing brain, which until now has been raised only in individual scientific studies.

– We believe that as a result of the project we will obtain solid and reliable data on the influence of smog on brains of children in the concentrations that we encounter every day in Poland. If the effects of smog are indeed as sinister as we suppose, then we hope that our discoveries will cause the action of the government and administrations responsible for air quality in Poland and in Europe – says project manager Dr Marcin Szwed from the Institute of Psychology of the Jagiellonian University.
