The project ‘How do continents grow? The Köli mantle complex in the Scandinavian Caledonides as a natural laboratory of continental accretion’ has received funding from the National Science Centre. The team working on the project is led by Dr Katarzyna Walczak from the AGH University of Science and Technology in Krakow. The team includes scientists from AGH and the University of Wrocław.

Continents are constantly shifting and changing shape. At one time, the lands of modern North America and Greenland were part of the continent Laurence, and today’s northern Europe was part of the continent Baltica. They were separated by the waters of the Japetus ocean.

The work of geologists resembles that of detectives – they try to reconstruct the course of processes on the basis of the traces they discover.

The project carried out by Polish scientists is expected to allow a better understanding of the mechanisms of continental growth.
