Researchers from Austria, China and Poland will implement the project “Nitrogen circulation in urban space: a new economic approach (UNCENT) to meet the challenges of climate change”. The head of the Polish team is Dr Eng. Monika Suchowska-Kisielewicz from the University of Zielona Góra.
Contamination with nitrogen has been considered one of the most serious global challenges. The most important sources of nitrogen compounds are agriculture and soil fertilization, combustion processes, landfills and waste processing installations as well as sewage treatment plants.
The aim of the project is to create “urban nitrogen balances”, to identify the causes and routes of release of these compounds and methods of counteracting, taking into account the recovery of useful materials – such as nutrients.
The amount of over 874,000 PLN is allocated from the Sustainable and Liveable Cities and Urban Areas call financed by the Chinese NSFC agency and the JPI Urban Europe network including the National Science Center belongs.
