Polish scientists to study the mental condition of pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic

16.06.2020

Scientists from the Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences (PAN) and the Jagiellonian University (UJ) in Kraków will check the mental condition of pregnant women during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The COVID-19 pandemic undoubtedly causes stress in pregnant women. This is unfavorable because it can affect the physiology of both mother and child. Strong stress in pregnancy can result in premature delivery, low birth weight of newborns, and after delivery it can delay motor and cognitive development. In adult life, the risk of certain diseases increases, e.g. obesity or diabetes – says Dr Anna Ziomkiewicz-Wichary from the Department of Anthropology, Institute of Immunology and Experimental Therapy of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

Therefore, scientists from the Polish Academy of Sciences and the Jagiellonian University will conduct surveys among women in Poland who undergo pregnancy and childbirth during the COVID-19 pandemic.
