Dr Eng. Łukasz Piątkowski from the Faculty of Technical Physics of the Poznan University of Technology together with a group of scientists from the Institute of Photonic Sciences in Barcelona developed an innovative research method involving the use of the phenomenon of stimulated emission for imaging and testing of physicochemical processes occurring in individual nano-objects.
Using stimulated emission, scientists were able to visualize individual quantum dots having a size of ~ 30 nm and investigate how the charge carriers (electrons and holes), while being excited in the quantum dot, can evolve over time, what happens to them, how they lose energy and how they interact with the environment.
The obtained results were published in the prestigious SCIENCE magazine. They are of fundamental importance for research in the field of photonics and photovoltaics because they show that scientists can very accurately track what is happening with excited electric charges at the nanoscale.
